Our meetings/workshops are held every fourth Thursday of every month (excluding December, July and August). We meet at North Douglas Pentecostal Church,
675 Jolly Place. The doors open at 6:45 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7:15 p.m.

"What Child Care Providers and Parents Need to Know"

Presented by Dr. Alison Rees, LIFE Seminars (Living in Families Effectively)

Allison’s presentations are down to earth, honest and to the point.  Lectures are packed with insights, and rich interactions with the audience.  While her subjects are pre-planned, her lectures are not which is why people don’t tire of the material when they repeat the courses.  She is rapidly expanding her knowledge to other professionals worldwide.

October 24th, 2019(Thursday)
"The Impact of Entertainment Media on Today's Families"
Presented by Shannon Husk, Prevention and Community Engagement Service Provider

Shannon's presentation will share the Canadian Pediatric Society's recommendations for screen time and why they are making these recommendations. We will talk about what we enjoy about technology and concerns around too much technology use. We will talk about where to limit technology; some filters, apps, search engines, websites and family media use plans that can help will this. We will look at the signs of misuse of technology and what to do about these concerns. I will also share information about what happens in the brain when we use technology and the changes, we are now seeing with prolonged tech use.
Overall, I would like people to hear real life stories connected to the impact of entertainment media on today's families. Shannon will talk about you and your child care and how technology use has effects in that area as well.

"Visual Arts for Children"

Presented by Jane Chadwick, artsREACH

Jane will be presenting a "Hands-On" painting fun workshop! She will be demonstrating different painting techniques using liquid tempura paint which participants will get a chance to make themselves to take home. Jane will be emphasizing the importance of play and experimentation for the children. The artsREACH program provides children with the opportunity to develop life skills by participating in high-quality arts programming.

Come and let your inner child out with this fun and enjoyable hands on painting experience!

"Chemical Awareness - How to Create a Healthier Home & Child Care Environment"
Presented by Kathleen Yan, Environmental Health Program, Health Canada

This workshop is about how chemicals in the environment affect health, safety with household chemicals, radon testing, air quality, food, drinking water, extreme heat and safety with consumer products. There will also be resources to take home. Kathleen is travelling all through Canada to bring this beneficial information to everyone.

"Chickens in Early Childhood Settings"

Presented by Kate Fraser, Bees Please Farms

Ever been interested in having chickens at your child care? Well here is your chance to learn all about it!

Kate will be covering how to rent chickens and integrate them into part of the daily routine with children of all ages. Kate will also talk about hatch rentals, and incubating eggs at your child care facility.

March 26th, 2020(Thursday)
"Sign Language for the Very Young"
Presented by Layla Cochrane

This 90-minute workshop will provide parents and educators with an overview of the Baby Signs program including the many benefits of signing, basic "How to's" for teaching babies and toddlers to sign, and many of the useful signs through fun games and songs.

April 23rd, 2020(Thursday)
"Early Childhood Speech and Language Developoment"   
Presented by Jana O'Connor, MSc, Registered Speech-Language Pathologist

Jana will present about important speech and language milestones in toddlers and preschoolers, including the key skills toddlers must have before words emerge. Participants will learn about the red flags for a typical speech and language development (including the early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder) and how caregivers in the early childhood setting can best support families in accessing timely communication support for their children. Practical strategies to encourage speech and language development with be shared.

Come and learn what care providers can do day-to-day to help little communicators thrive!
