Our meetings/workshops are held every fourth Thursday of every month (excluding December, July and August). We meet at North Douglas Pentecostal Church,
675 Jolly Place. The doors open at 6:45 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7:15 p.m.

Want to explore this beautiful city we live in? Need ideas of places to take your child care children? Come and hear about many exciting places to go and explore. Places with varying costs from free to tourists attractions. Receive a handout with a number of resources. Also receive a handout and hear what licensing has to say regarding field trips!!

"Reducing Challenging Behaviours: Creating a Positive Enviroment and Supporting Transitions"

Presented by Mary Ellen Meunier, ECE Dip, MA

Want does a "positive enviroment" look like? Estimates suggest that from 20% to 30 % of a young child's day is involved in transitioning from one activity to another and this often invites behaviour problems. Understanding how much time children spend each day in transitions leads us to make changes that help reduce the stress for both children and adults.

"Policies and Procedures in Licensed Child Care Facilities"
Presented by Jennie Williams and Theresa Wright, Child Care Licensing Officers with VIHA

Find out what is needed when writing policies. What is VIHA looking for? What is required policies for a licensed child care facilities and the underlying reason for them. Practical examples and explanations will be given. Finally time for questions.

"Let's Play! Gaining Meaning to Number and Developing Number Sense in Early Childhood"

Presented by Dr. Werner Liedtke, Professor Emeritus-UVIC and Author of 3 books

During the session Dr. Liedtke will try to describe, illustrate and simulate activities and problems that help children make sense of number and develop number sense - the key foundation for numeracy. Questions and strategies that can foster: confidence, willingness to take risks, perseverance, thinking, flexable thinking, ability to visualize and use of imagination will be illustrated.

"Sportsball Games for all Ages and Spaces"
Presented by Lee Richardson, BSc, Bed, Sportball

Our workshop focuses on creative ways to use limited spaces and equipment and how to modify games for any age group. Participants will engage in many high-energy movement activities, based on the core of the Sportball program: improving gross motor skills, physical strength, social skills and self-esteem. Through creative instruction and positive encouragement, you will learn and participate in high-energy games in a fun and exciting enviroment. Please wear confortable attire and be prepared to have an entertaining active time!

"Take A Bite"
Presented by a Dental Hygienist and Community Nutritionisl from VIHA

An interactive workshop to explore the resources and materials available to promote the health of children aged birth to 5 years. Supports for parents and programs available through local health units will be reviewed.

"Art Creativity with Young Children - Part II"
Presented by Emily Grav from The Paint Box (www.thepaintbox-victoria.com)

Emily is returning to demonstrate some different art projects that involve varied mixed media techniques that will excite, focus and encourage creativity in all children age 2 to 4 years old. Emily graduated from UVIC with an Honors BFA in Visual Arts in 2005. She gained extensive experience teaching art and ESL while living in Taiwan from 2007 to 2008 and also directed children's Art camps here in Victoria. In September 2008, Emily opened The Paint Box, a local art school in Fernwood, since then has been teaching visual arts to all ages. One of the most rewarding, and challenging age groups Emily teaches are the 2 to 5 year old children. Her experience with this age group has lead her to create many mixed media projects that work on children's concentration, creativity and fine motor skills.

"The Making of a Felt Story"
Presented by Rena Laberge, President of SVIFCCA

Have you ever wanted to make your own felt stories but didn't know where to start? Rena will demonstrate some of the felt stories she has made and you will also make your own felt story to go along with our "Happy the Clown". Don't have a Happy story yet, don't worry you can use your own clown or purchase one that night. This will also be our "End of the Year" potluck night so please feel free to bring a little something to share. Come and enjoy some fellowship with other providers and learn how to turn those felt squares into something for your programming as well as going home with a story of your own. Please bring your own scissors and a glue gun or white glue.
